Employment as a Felon

I’ve been in recovery nearly 12 years. It wasn’t a choice I initially made, the police and judge made it for me. The choice I made was to remain in recovery and not go back to “that life”… If you wanna call it a life at all…

I needed routine to keep me busy and give me something to be excited about.

One of the hardest things for me was finding meaningful employment as a 3x felon. But I did it. I didn’t want to work for McDonalds (not that there’s anything wrong with that, it just wasn’t for me) or a retail chain where advancement would never come. I wanted to have the same opportunities as everyone else. I was after all, no different from them except that I have a horrible backstory.

After much research, I found that…as hard as it is to believe… One of the largest employers of citizens with felonies is in fact the US Government. I was intimidated by the application process. It’s long, excruciating and scary. But worth it. It took about 6 months from account creation to the day I received my offer of employment, but I DID IT! And you can too. I was actually hired for a Union position with the Department of the Treasury. I couldn’t believe it.

Just wanted to give some hope that life is actually great and good things can happen. Even if you have a felony (or several). As long as you remain in recovery. I’ll put a link to the site below. You can search by location and filter results to only show jobs for civilians. Don’t hesitate to apply for positions even if they require a degree you don’t have. They will often accept experience in the field instead. It’s worth a shot.

Good luck in all that you do, I’m rooting for you!

Edit: it will not allow me to post a link, but the website is USA jobs . Gov (with no spaces lol)
