I’m about a year into my recovery and would like to start giving back to the community. I have heard about peers, is there anyone who can point me in the right direction?
Yess! My career started in the peer space and im so grateful for the role. I actually did a year with Recovery Corps (ill link it) and it was awesome. Gave me everything I needed and paid for the exam so when I was done I could walk right into a job. Lots of people that have served get hired on at their org after their service year. If you’re looking for something a little quicker, theres lots of places that offer the Recovery Coach Academy, which is the requirement to take the exam to be a peer. Where are you located?
I do have a family to feed. I don’t know if that would be feasible for me at all. How much do peer recovery specialists make? Roughly?
Makes sense- Unfortunately too many roles in this space dont pay nearly enough for the work done and the mental load it takes to do it well. I think an average CPRS pay is around 20$ and hour? The benefit of Recovery Corps is that its not considered “income” so most people qualify for max SNAP benefits. But STILL thats not feasable for most people.
What draws you to the role?
I don’t know too much about how the job works. Is it the type of thing you could do part time for additional money?
I have heard that it really isn’t a part time gig anymore. Not since the recent changes in the legislation.
