I’am a young indigenous women whose always wanted to learn our culture. My life wasn’t hard but it wasn’t easy also. My family does some culture related things like attending powwows, trying to smudge everyday. My family never helped me sought out my Indian name or never have they helped me learn more of our ways because some family members were in active addiction. So in teen years I decided to try marijuana, then opiates. In the back of my mind I always wanted to learn our ways but I was an addict and afraid to ask for help. How that I am 5 months sober and I thank the MATS and my boyfriend and family for helping me. I am also learning our ways as indigenous people. I also got gifted an eagle feather and learning what it takes to have and respect our eagle feathers. I am also glad my kids are learning our traditions at a young age because I never got that chance. I am a proud anishinabe women and glad and excited to continue to learn more and more of our ways.
