People who have in the past struggled with "chronic relapse" or intermittent recurrence; what was useful to you overcoming cravings in the first 3-6 months, and beyond?

Hi everyone! I’m not sure if this is a proper place for introductions, but nevertheless- I’m Aubrey, and I’m in Recovery! I’ve struggled a lot in the past 2 years with not using, but had a decent stretch of 6 and 18 months. Lately have struggled to get to 3 months, and am coming up on that in a few weeks. Any tips or whatever is much appreciated!
Thanks for the invite @cashavelli187, and Pathfinder for creating this space! :grinning:

Welcome aboard Aubrey! Its pretty dang cliche but honestly when getting started I just kept my goal as one day at a time. Every time I was close to going back out I would remind myself how difficult it was to accumulate any amount of time in recovery. I also would lean heavily on my support system and be very transparent when I was going through a rough patch. I was very lucky to have an absolutely awsesome sober house that I could lean on.

Hey @Probably_Aubrey glad you’re here! I agree with Luke. I was never a one day at a time person, rather a one trigger at a time. I do see the value now, 7 years in and one day at a time helps to get through tough weeks, heavy and hard situations and all the shit. One thing I do is just go the fuck to bed. Ill take something to help me sleep and go to bed. Theres usually not much going the fuck to bed can cure. Depression and hard shit is still there the next day, but its one day closer to the clouds opening. And you just hold on.

Hey, cliches are cliche for a reason! I’m good at catastrophizing the future, so can always use the reminder to stay grounded in the present; appreciate it.

Thonks for the welcome, both you and Luke! That’s actually like the most solid and practical advice ever: Go to bed … Lol .
Seriously tho.
I actually practice this without realizing it!

“How’d you do it?”
“Well, I mostly just slept for the first 12 months…”

I’m kidding around, but this really is good advice, and I appreciate you taking the time to comment!

:joy: I mean sleeping for 12 months sounds amazing! I used to get manic and stay awake and overthink shit until I drove myself crazy. Enter sleep aid!

I don’t have any tips or advice. However I am also at 100 days sober. I do my best to discipline myself in a routine everyday and stick to it. The best things I can do to maintain a healthy day of sobriety is focusing on my mind, body and soul. If I’ve at least done that then I can guarantee myself one more day. Pretty soon one more day turns into a week, then a month, and next thing I know so much time has passed. “I don’t count the days, I just make the days count”, and as long as I am able to take something healthy, new, productive, and positive into the following day then I know I’ve secured another day in sobriety. “Joy will meet me by the morning dew.” #happy&sober
