Abstinence

Does anyone believe an abstinent approach is the way to go? I personally do not and want to know others input.

It’s up to every person individually. I stayed abstinent 7 years- if you don’t count nicotine, caffeine, sugar, various herbal supplements, psych meds… And began using a slightly psychoactive substance recently when I realized that for me, there have always been things I fall back on for comfort and that if I can still focus on my own personal growth my recovery is still strong.

Im with @Bella13 . Depends on the person. I know happy and successful people of every recovery pathway. People in recovery from alcoholism who can have THC, people in recovery from opioids who can have a drink now and then. People in recovery from opioids and alcohol who microdose and use ketamine (medically administered). I have alcoholism so I am abstinent from alcohol, and I have to be forever but Ive had medical needs for pain killers with no issues. I also know people who know themselves well enough to know they can never touch ANYTHING.

Depends on the person. First few years I couldnt touch anything. No THC no alcohol no nothing. Now I can have a THC seltzer with no issues, I could give or take it, but its helped keep me off the anxiety meds and sleep aid

Abstinence was very much for me. But understand its not for everyone. I had to face everything without any sort of impairment.

10 year IV user, started drinking after a year in recovery because it wasn’t my DOC and it wasn’t an issue. Until it was. The descent wasn’t fast but it got bad. Giving up booze was fuckin tough. I’m abstinent from all mood altering substances now. I just needed better coping skills and tools. There’s nothing I can’t do without inner work
