How do I get started…

Ok I could use some help. I hate exercising. I really struggle to enjoy it. But I’m too young to feel as old as I do and be this out of shape. I’m not u healthy but I know if I dont start doing SOMETHING my health just won’t improve. Anyone have any suggestions? The cost of going to fun classes or even a good gym is insane and I need to get creative. Help?

@Ruby oh I hear that.

Just for context, I didn’t do any kind of exercise until about 15 years ago. Most of my life I didn’t do anything so it wasn’t like exercise was always part of my life.

A couple of things to start.

  1. What ever you start with it shouldn’t be a chore otherwise you might just give up
  2. Start easy. You don’t have to jump in and crush it on day one. If you hate it you won’t want to do it it again.
  3. What sorts of things do you like to do to move or what do you want to do? Start there.

For example:
If you want to start with running. Pick an easy distance and start there. It could be simply run around the block. Do it four times a week. Set a schedule and stick to it.
Keep it easy. Run walk is just fine as a place to start. Get around the block with some running involved. Keep doing a little more running each time.
When the block feels fine then go two, then go three then go four and keep moving the distance out.

If your jam is more of a workout thing the approach is the same. Start with 10 squat, 10 pushups and 10 lunges. Do it every day for two weeks. Do more reps and more sets as you feel ready.

Bottom line, just start. Start small enough you’re not overwhelmed and start with something you’ll do.

The best exercise is something you’ll actually do. Once you get the habit and the desire then you can figure out how to do your version of excelling.

Hope that helps.

Oh, and, an accountability partner is alway helpful. If they do it with you, great. At a minimum somebody that you can brag too and confess when you skip.

So, where are you going to start? Tell me your plan? Keep it simple and something you’ll like doing.

Thats actually very helpful. Starting is the most overwhelming for some reason. Maybe because historically nothing has been sustainable. I did aerial yoga once and love it! But again, cost.

Ok. Im going to run around the block and push the stroller. Maybe my kid will be encouragement  He is obsessed with the stroller.

Have you heard of the Phoenix online? I know you mentioned you don’t like online but there are other ways to connect in the app…

There are a lot of different options for getting started. Here is another one.

Free fitness a couple times a week. I know a many folks that go to NP. The whole range of ability levels. I’ve been to a couple but the schedule doesn’t work well for me.
