Overcoming Alcohol and Cigarette Addiction for a Healthier Life

I’m a 35-year-old mom with two kids, a 10 year old daughter and a 7-year-old son. For years, I relied on alcohol and cigarettes to cope with stress. What started as a way to unwind became a habit I couldn’t control. I told myself it wasn’t a problem, but I could feel it pulling me away from the person I wanted to be.
In February this year, my daughter asked, “Mom, why do you always smell like smoke?” That simple question made me pause and take a hard look at my life. I realized my habits weren’t just affecting my health; they were shaping the environment my kids were growing up in. Worse, alcohol was making me emotionally distant. I wasn’t fully present with them, and that broke my heart.
The very next day, I decided enough was enough. I quit both alcohol and cigarettes. It wasn’t easy. There were moments I wanted to give up, but I kept reminding myself of my reason. I wanted to be the kind of mom my kids could look up to, someone they could count on to be fully there for them.
Now, months later, I’m proud to say I’ve left both behind. I feel healthier, my mind is clearer, and my bond with my kids is stronger than ever. It hasn’t been a perfect journey, but every day without alcohol or cigarettes feels like a victory.
If you’re trying to quit, know that it’s possible. It will be tough, but the rewards are worth it. Focus on your reason, lean on the people who care about you, and take it one day at a time. You can do it, and the life waiting on the other side is worth fighting for.
