Running as a metaphor for recovery and frankly life

If you’ve seen some of my other posts it’ll be no secret that I’m a deep believer in the power of physical activity. For me it’s running. The longer the better. I’m not going to be winning anything for my running so it isn’t about competing. It’s about learning, self-therapy, community, moving forward and seeing my own achievements.

But why running? For me it’s about how running and elements of running are such a metaphor for life. When I’m in dark places running is there for me. It’s not usually easy but it is always rewarding. It always makes me feel better.

This morning I had to do my workout on a treadmill so I loaded up a video and gave it a watch. I’ve linked it here because there is a much deeper story beyond the fact that this guy is a super human. Yeah, this guy has done something that very few people can do, however he also speaks to going to very dark places. This runner, Tim, is in long term recovery, he speaks to loss, and he speaks to recovery.

If you like seeing people that have been broken achieve super human efforts than this is a good watch.

I’m SO with you on everything except “the longer the better.” When I found running, a couple years into sobriety, it was really transformative. You should really check out Mile in My Shoes! We are at numerous facilities in the twin cities, forming running teams to break down barriers and empower each other’s healing and growth. You’d LOVE it!
